Understanding Dubai's Dress Code Rules
Dubai is a cosmopolitan city, but it is also rooted in Islamic traditions. Understanding the cultural expectations is key to a hassle-free vacation.
1. Public Spaces (Malls, Souks, and Streets)
In general public areas like shopping malls and traditional markets (souks), the rule of thumb is to cover shoulders and knees. Choose breathable, loose-fitting linen trousers, midi skirts, and short-sleeved shirts.
2. Beachwear & Beach Clubs
Swimsuits, bikinis, and board shorts are perfectly acceptable at beaches, hotel pools, and private beach clubs. However, remember to cover up with a kaftan or t-shirt when leaving the sandy areas.
3. Fine Dining & Nightclubs
Many upscale lounges and restaurants in Downtown Dubai or Dubai Marina enforce smart-casual or formal dress codes. Gentlemen should wear trousers and closed-toe shoes; ladies typically opt for dresses or elegant jumpsuits.
